Let’s work together

Writing for print
Who says print is dead? In a world of digital noise, print can provide a welcome moment of quiet reflection. With extensive experience writing for newspapers, magazines and corporate reports, I’m a safe pair of hands. I have experience in everything from flatplans and production schedules, to interviews, feature writing, editing and proofreading. I often work as an integrated part of a publishing team, working directly with clients as well as liaising with contributors, photographers and designers.

Writing for web
Writing for web is a distinct skill to writing for print, though both rely on a keen understanding of audience and a mastery of words. Over 20+ years in the industry, I’ve written for digital magazines, online news platforms, blogs and websites. I’m comfortable with online publishing tools, and have experience writing SEO-optimised copy to reach your audience. AI is transforming the digital landscape, but it works best when combined with human insight – that’s where a skilled copywriter can prove their worth.

Press
As a former newspaper journalist, I know what newsdesks are looking for. The old approach to PR – blasting out blanket press releases – no longer cuts through. Instead, effective PRs build relationships with trusted journalists and find opportunities to create genuine brand engagement. I have experience in everything from writing thought leadership articles to crisis communications strategies. My approach is pragmatic, placing strong content and consistent messaging at the heart of any campaign.

Stakeholder engagement
As a former development manager with Channel 4 and Focus North, I understand the importance of maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders. These include elected members, investors, industry bodies, the press and the general public. My career also involved a spell as an elected member and politics reporter, so I have seen both sides of the fence! I can shape your engagement strategy, deliver clear briefings and reports, and get a conversation started.

Project management
Capacity is the number one issue holding back progress in the public and third sector. In my experience, the opportunities and the funding are out there, but a lack of resource within internal teams means those opportunities often pass by. I can provide a floating resource to kick things into gear, working alongside your team as and when needed to get new projects over the line. A small investment in external support often delivers big returns, as well as offering a new perspective on old challenges.

Carbon reduction plans
With the Scottish Government setting ambitious targets for carbon reduction, there is growing pressure on supply chain businesses to address their own emissions. Many public sector organisations are making carbon reduction plans a pre-requisite for funding. For SMEs this is a daunting prospect, but it needn’t be. I have undertaken training with the excellent Climate Springboard, enabling me to measure your carbon footprint and produce a professional reduction plan.
Selected work
I have contributed writing to the following projects – some directly and others through a publishing agency. All rights reserved to the client.
